TTT: Quotes from recent reads that really stuck with me

I almost skipped this week’s Top 10 Tuesday by That Artsy Reader Girl when I saw that it was book quotes. While I do mark out or write down quotes that stick out to me while I am reading, I really don’t track them or keep them in a central location. So when prompts like this come up, I am usually at a loss for where to find the quotes. However, there have been so many books that had some memorable quotes in the past year or two that I really couldn’t pass this prompt up. With going back to reviews that I wrote and using Goodreads, I was able to compile the following quotes that have really stuck with me.

  • “Yes, hard work and experience are essential. But so is timing. And luck. Don’t ever discount the importance of luck in terms of determining your opportunities and your future.” – Alex Trebek, The Answer is…
  • “When something is broken, you can put it back together. It may not fit quite the same, or work like it did once before, but that doesn’t mean it’s no longer useful.” – The House in the Cerulean Sea
  • “..In order to change the minds of many, you have to first start with the minds of a few.” – The House in the Cerulean Sea
  • “I was born with the same gift from God we are all born with – the impulse to reach out and lessen the suffering of another human being. It was a gift, and we each had a choice whether to use this gift or not.” – Anthony Ray Hinton, The Sun Does Shine
  • “People think that intimacy is about sex. But intimacy is about truth. When you realize you can tell someone your truth, when you can show yourself to them, when you stand in front of them bare and their response is ‘you’re safe with me’- that’s intimacy.” – The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
  • “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.” -Atticus Finch, To Kill A Mockingbird
  • “People don’t want to open their eyes and see the truth because the illusion suits them.” – Behold the Dreamers
  • “You want to know what weakness is? Weakness is treating someone as though they belong to you. Strength is knowing that everyone belongs to themselves.” – Homegoing
  • “A vulgar word, well placed and said with just enough vigour, can express far more than its polite equivalent.” – The Dictionary of Lost Words
  • “Sometimes the thing we want most in the world is the thing we’re most afraid of. And the thing we’re most afraid of is often the thing we most want.” –The Wishing Game
  • “Maybe raising children was just giving them the things you loved most in the world and hoping that they loved them too.” – Nothing to See Here
  • “If you aim to be something you are not, you will always fail. Aim to be you. Aim to look and act and think like you. Aim to be the truest version of you. Embrace that you-ness. Endorse it. Love it. Work hard at it. And don’t give a second thought when people mock it or ridicule it. Most gossip is envy in disguise.” – The Midnight Library
